The conventional Christian English pronunciation of&nbsp;<em>Jah<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:IPA\/English\">\/\u02c8d\u0292\u0251\u02d0\/<\/a>, even though the letter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J\">J<\/a>&nbsp;here transliterates the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palatal_approximant\">palatal approximant<\/a>&nbsp;(Hebrew \u05d9&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yodh\">Yodh<\/a>). The spelling&nbsp;<em>Yah<\/em>&nbsp;is designed to make the pronunciation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:IPA\/English\">\/\u02c8j\u0251\u02d0\/<\/a>&nbsp;explicit in an English-language context (see also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanization_of_Hebrew\">romanization of Hebrew<\/a>), especially for Christians who may not use Hebrew regularly during prayer and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This short form of the name occurs 50 times in the text of the Hebrew Bible, of which 24 form part of the phrase &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hallelujah\">Hallelujah<\/a>&#8220;, a phrase that continues to be employed by Jews and Christians to give praise to Yahweh.\u00a0In the Christian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_James_Version\">King James Version<\/a>\u00a0(1611) there is a single instance of\u00a0<em>JAH<\/em>\u00a0(capitalized), in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psalm_68\">Psalm 68<\/a>:4.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/An_American_Translation\">An American Translation<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1939) and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_King_James_Version\">New King James Version<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jah#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;NKJV&#8221; (1982) follows KJV in using\u00a0<em>Yah<\/em>\u00a0in this verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While pronouncing the tetragrammaton is forbidden for Jews, articulating &#8220;Jah&#8221;\/&#8221;Yah&#8221; is allowed, but is usually confined to prayer and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name\u00a0<em>Jah<\/em>\u00a0is frequently employed by adherents of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rastafari\">Rastafari<\/a>\u00a0to refer to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Etymology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Main article:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yahweh\">Yahweh<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_god\">national god<\/a>\u00a0of the kingdoms of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Israel_(Samaria)\">Israel (Samaria)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Judah\">Judah<\/a>\u00a0is written in the Hebrew Bible as \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YHWH\">YHWH<\/a>), which modern scholars often render as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yahweh\">Yahweh<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0The short form\u00a0<em>Jah\/Yah<\/em>, appears in Exodus 15:2 and 17:16, Psalm 89:9, (arguably, by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emendation_(textual)\">emendation<\/a>) Song of Songs 8:6,\u00a0as well as in the phrase\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hallelujah\">Hallelujah<\/a><\/em>. The name of Yahweh is also incorporated into several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theophory_in_the_Bible\">theophoric names<\/a>, however, in almost all cases the Hebrew name itself uses\u00a0<em>-y\u0101h\u016b<\/em>, not\u00a0<em>-y\u0101h<\/em>.
